Here comes Santa Claus...

Hoorah! We finally escaped the confines of the house today and went to the mall (yes, this constitutes an exciting outing) and decided to visit Santa while we were there! Jasper was a very good boy this year so he wished for lots and lots of toys (and of course world peace, a cure for aids, and an end to extreme poverty).

Yes, its hard to believe that my little boy is 6 months old already. He is truly the light of my life right now and a joy to spend every day with (even when we are bored and snowbound in the house for days on end). Jasper is a very happy and smiley guy, just not in front of the camera, like ever.... : )

Congratulations Jeff and Sheila!

Hoorah! Jeff and Sheila finally got hitched! The entire event took place at Bravo Bistro on Coal Harbour last night and was a beautiful, fun, laughter and love filled evening complete with a romantic sprinkling of snow....

He's up, up....

Another major milestone! Jasper is finally sitting up unassisted for longish stretches of time. However, put a toy to his left or right and makes like humpty dumpty pretty darn quick.....

Casa Nielsen

Well, after 4 long drywall dusty years we have finally completed Casa Nielsen. Thanks to Carsten/Val and Mom/Dad for all the support (both physical and financial) for making our first home something we are really proud of. Here are a few pics of the finished landscaping and new front walkway - looks sharp non?

Update! Nov 26, 2006 - Here's a lovely picture of our new lawn buried under an inch of snow....

Welcome Marcos to Team Nielsen!

Most of you already know that I have been fostering a child through World Vision for a few years now (her name is Sethabile and she lives in South Africa). We recently decided to add to Team Nielsen by fostering another child - his name is Marcos and is 11 months old and lives in Honduras. For now, its our little way of giving back since we have been blessed with so much already.....

Ok, I admit it....

...for the first time for my whole maternity leave thus far I can honestly say I am bored. Yes, bored. Its raining and windy so not a good day for a walk, we have no scheduled activities today, we are stuck in the house waiting for a reapir man, and we have already sung our whole repetoire of Moother Goose songs three times through. We decided to take some self portraits for a lark...

Happy 6 months Everett!

Dear Everett - Happy 6 month birthday! Jasper can't wait to hang with you again!

Look out Thorpedo

Yesterday we took Jasper swimming for the first time (in Vancouver). His first time ever was with Mimi last month while we were in Summerland. Jasper seemed to not mind the pool, I wouldn't exactly say he was in love with the whole experience, but he didn't complain either. He liked floating on his back and soaking me with water while splashing away with his arms and legs. Next time I guess I should actually get in the pool with him and Aaron since I ended up soaking wet anyways....

Dear Paige

Dearest Paigey,
Please tell your mommy and daddy to send more pictures of you (and your sister) so we have something to post on our blog.
Love, JAC

Update - Nov 15/06....Ok, your dad sent an updated 7 month pic - happy 7 months! xo JAC

Tooting my own horn

Last month, I attended an event at the BC Sports Hall of Fame to open a new exhibit called "In Her Footsteps - Celebrating BC Women in Sport". My former womens Ultimate Frisbee team (Prime/Team Canada) was one of three inductees into the exhibit. It was very cool to be formally recognized for all of our acheivements in the sport over the past 8 years. It was especially cool to be reunited with our World Championship trophy, which was unceremoniously left on the field after we won gold in Heilbronn Germany in 2000 (the bell and case weighed over 100 pounds!). Somehow, the bell managed to find its way onto an Air Canada flight and back home to Vancouver to be a lasting part of the exhibit. Hoorah for the bell, enshildijung forever, double pumps for us!

The Noble Yam

For those of you who don't already know the story of how my husband and I first met, it was largely thanks to the delicious yam burrito dinner that Ashley conjured up so many years ago. Funny thing was, Aaron didn't even really like yams, but I think Ashely sprinkled something special in those yam burritos that night! Anyways, fast forward about 5 years...Jasper still doesn't have much interest in *solid* foods yet, he's not gagging anymore when I try, but he isn't that excited either - until I gave him yams! Yes, yams! My boy loves yams! I love my boy!

My First Tooth

Oh today is a big news day! Jasper got his first tooth this week and is trying to get his hands and mouth on just about anything including my fingers (ouch!)...There is one tiny little white nub on the lower left front that has just cracked the surface of the gums - this might explain the (extra) grumpy behavior of the last few days : )

Beach Day!

Jasper and I met Tanis and her beautiful daughter Kayna (aka Jaspers future girlfriend) at the beach today for a lovely walk, its been nice to share the first few months of mommyhood (and coffee, and shopping, and lunching) with a good friend.....

Entry by Jasper

Here is the first entry by our budding computer nerd!

The first 5 months in 1000 words or less....

Ok, well the challenge is on now to summarize the first 5 months of Jasper's life into one blog post, but here goes.....

Jasper Michael Holck Nielsen was born at 2:31am by C-section at Women's hospital in Vancouver, BC. He was 8 pounds even, and had a smattering of white blond hair - so cute! We stayed at the hospital for 3 days until I just about lost my mind from lack of sleep and the cacophony of noise that a maternity wing at a hospital creates 24/7 (why oh why do they put ice machines right outside the door of a patient's room?). The first few weeks at home are a total blur already (note to future mommies - start one of these right away!) with the exception of the sleep deprivation and the endless crying (both Jasper and I!). Turns out I was not producing enough milk for Jasper so essentially he was starving for the first 2 weeks of life, but all that changed once we were introduced to baby formula. Hoorah for baby formula! Luckily Jasper has two amazing Grandma's who came and helped us out for the first few weeks, I am not sure what I would have done without them..thank you, thank you, thank you Mimi and Grandma Day!

June was Father's day - we went to Queens Park in New West to celebrate with the extended family (Campbells and Grahams). Jasper also met Papa C for the first time and got to wish Grandpa Day a happy birthday!

We spent most of the summer going outside for walks and getting Jasper used to being out and about. We took our first trip to the Nielsen family cabin when Jasper was 6 weeks old to visit the entire clan and Jasper met Great-Grandma Inge and MELK for the first time (aka Auntie Michelle, Uncle Kent, Cousins Everett and Logan)

In August Jasper got to meet Aunties Feathers and Shark for the first time. Jasper was annointed the nickname "J-bird" by Auntie Feathers which has stuck to this day. We were sad that Auntie Feathers had to fly away home to the land of shortbread and haggis, but hopefully we will go visit her in 2007. Jasper also took his first (of many) trips to Grandma and Grandpa's house in Victoria, its nice for both of us to spend time where I grew up and for me to get a bit of a break, especially while Aaron is away travelling.

September was a big travel month! We spent the long weekend in Whistler at the Hilton and we took a trip to Ucluelet in September for Auntie Louise's wedding. The whole weekend was absolutely amazing - perfect weather, perfect friends and family, perfect wedding...the bride was stunning beyond words and we had the best time. I also had the privelege of being the maid of honor - I can't tell you how much I treasure my friendship with Louise and how happy and proud I am to have stood beside her on her special day.

October already! We headed to Summerland for Thanksgiving and unfortunately Jasper got his first (of many) colds. Nonetheless we saw Mimi and Papa's amazingly renovated house, had yummy turkey at Auntie Michelle's and had some QT with Ole at her house. Jasper and I took another trip to the Island, this time with Sullivan in tow...its still hard to believe that I was willing to give away my first baby, but I think its for the best for everyone. Sullivan will get all the love and attention he wants and deserves from Grandma, and Aaron will finally put away to bottle of antifreeze that he kept threatening to use!

So now we're pretty much caught up...Jasper is thriving in every way and is generally a very happy playful little guy. He loves to hang with his cousins Marley, Paigey, Logan and Everett - eventhough he doesn't get to see them as much as he'd like. He still looks so much like his daddy and is becoming very independant and willful already (with a nasty little temper developing!). He rolls over with ease, is almost sitting up on his own and loves to chew on his feet. I am loving every day I spend with him, both the good days and the bad days, as he is changing so quickly into a little boy, where has the time gone?

It's about time.....

It's hard to believe that it's been 5 months since our darling son - Jasper Michael Holck Nielsen entered our lives and I am finally getting around to creating this blog to better share our daily lives with friends and family. Hope you enjoy it!
